a5c7b9f00b A group of archaeologists and combat experts led by Paul Walker and Frances O'Connor use a "3-D fax machine" (so much for technobabble!) to time-travel back to France in 1357, in hopes of retrieving Walker's father and returning safely to the present. No such luck. Fending for themselves against marauding hordes of medieval French warriors at war with the invading British, these semi-intrepid travelers find their body count rising, and the deadline for their return home is rapidly approaching.
A time travel always changes the present. When a group of archeologists go back in the year 1357 on a rescue mission they find themselves in the middle of a war between the English and the French troops. They try to return to the present safely altogether.
It is such shameful to see a book of one of the best science-fiction writers today being turned into plain stupid family entertainment venture. Michael Chrichton&#39;s books are often about the moral implication of science, about the mis-use of science for capitalist profit. Using smart setting, humor and catching action they are pageturner and convey real messages. The cinematic pace of the action resulted in many good films, but this is not the case here. <br/><br/> &#39;Timeline&#39; may not be one of his best books, the plot in the book has some holes of itself but it still has the author mark, is complex and the characters are more than simplistic sketches in the film version. The film is almost as bad as most of the Disney Studios movies are. Some decent acting by Billy Connolly is not enough to save the day. This is teenager entertainment, not more. 5/10 on my personal scale.
Read the book (if you can read). &quot;Timeline&quot; follows the book very closely and obviously can NOT possibly paint the same picture with the same exactness that the book did.<br/><br/>If you&#39;re the type of viewer that would see a movie(?) like &quot;2 crass and 2 Fumbling&quot; (2 fast 2 furious) then this is not the movie for you. Better to watch a poorly done Steven Seagal movie if you fit into the former category.<br/><br/>Again, for the time frame that was allowed, &quot;Timeline&quot; followed the book very well. Admittedly, if one has not READ &quot;Timeline&quot;, the true gist of the story, in the movie, may be lost, especially if one is lacking imagination.
This isn't a movie of hoary Sherwood Forest clich&#233;s. It manages, through sheer artistic force, to stoop below clich&#233;–to seem both fresh and rotten at once.
There are 10 people who traveled in time; this is what happened to each of them:<br/><br/>Chris, Kate &amp; Chris&#39; father, prof. Johnston all make it back to 2003 safely.<br/><br/>Frank Gordon: Gets a sword in the chest from De Kere and is left for dead when he is cut loose from the wagon.<br/><br/>François: Gets killed by one of Lord Olliver&#39;s aides-de-camps; also via a sword in the chest (They think he&#39;s a spy sent by Lord Arnaud).<br/><br/>Gomez: Gets too many arrows in his chest from an English archer as soon as the group gets to 1357. He is left for dead.<br/><br/>Baretta: Blows himself up with his own grenade as he hits his marker, thus he dies in 2003 (He also blows up the time machine).<br/><br/>Decker/De Kere: Dies in the battle of La Roque when the French army attack the castle.<br/><br/>André Marek: Chooses to remain in 1357 and get married to Claire.<br/><br/>Doniger: Steps into the time machine as Chris, Kate &amp; Prof Johnston are coming back to the present. He gets his neck slashed by a knight&#39;s sword as soon as he gets to 1357.
